Disturbing sign of the recession

March 10, 2009

This may not have too much to do with sports other than it comes from the best sports town on the planet, Boston, and that it relates to our TV theme song bracket (make sure you vote for the top 11 “bubble” shows”) but the bartender that Sam Malone (Ted Danson’s character) was based on has been let go from “Cheers” the bar in Boston.

The bar, Bull & Finch was renamed after the show came on the air, and has been going strong ever since.

According to the AP:

Eddie Doyle was the guy who really did know everybody’s name.

But after tending bar for 35 years at the Boston tavern that inspired the television show “Cheers,” Doyle has been laid off.

The bar’s owner says the economy is to blame.

The 66-year-old Doyle tells The Boston Globe he’s not bitter and may write a book about his experiences.

It seems like in this economy, nobody is safe.

On that note, I’m going to get back to doing some real work. Work I get paid for.
