Is it Christmas? In July?

I don’t know if Sean Burnett knows the definition of irony, but he knows how to use it in a sentence (from Circling the Bases):

Former Pirates and current Nats pitcher Sean Burnett on the state of the Pirates:

They’re the laughingstock of baseball right now. They’ve gotten rid of everybody. They won’t keep anybody around. Some of the guys here, they don’t understand it, but Nyjer and I knew this was coming. What I keep telling the guys here is that the hardest part is that Pittsburgh, as a sports town, is unbelievable. With what the Steelers and Penguins have done, they’re dying for a winner in baseball, too. They’re dying to cheer the Pirates on. And now, they don’t have anybody they even know. Guys like Jack and Freddy, the faces of the franchise, players they’re supposed to be locking up, they’re all gone. What’s going to bring people to the ballpark now?”

CGally gets upset with me when I make fun of the Pirates, but seriously, how do I turn down ammo like this or anything else they do? It would be a disservice to all of you if I didn’t post these things. But back to the post, who does Sean Burnett think he is? Oh that’s right, a player the Pirates got rid of. I guess he might know what he’s talking about. Carry on, Sean.

Point of clarrification: I don't "get upset" when you make fun of the Pirates. What's not to make fun of?

And I do like when players say this kind of thing. It's one thing for media members or fans to say stuff. But hopefully all these players tlaking will slap management in the face.

To be fair, the GM just started last year, so this is HIS first time blowing up the Pirates. And you have to admit, he didn't half ass it.

That being said, I don't think it will work. When's training camp start for my SUPERBOWL CHAMPION PITTSBURGH STEELERS?

  2. The Northerner Says:

If you don't get upset then how do you explain that tear-filled phone call I got about a month ago?

And Steelers players report today with practice starting tomorrow. But it doesn't matter, the Patriots already started practice and are light years ahead of the Steelers already. Might was well just have your pizza party and give all the Steelers players their little plastic trophy now, because the season is already over.

  3. The Northerner Says:

How did I manage to use the word "already" like 10 times in three sentences?

So, I may have lost priveleges to contribute, but I will reclaim them as best I can.

The Pirates are indeed a struggling organization. Finances have been against them for some time, and with the economy being down, that only gets amplified. However, these moves may make little sense shortterm, but could be longterm benefits.

It appears to this avid baseball fan, the Pirates management is trying their best to load up on talented prospects. Think Tampa Bay Devil Rays strategy. Get young talent and build a team for 2-3 years in the future. It lowers costs so the organization can make some money (which it needs).

  5. A. Young Says:

The Northerner has a comment everytime a move is made in the Pirate's organization but is strangely quiet when news breaks about his beloved Big Papi and Manny being cheaters.

  6. C Gally Says:

    Point, A Young

And we had to consolidate the staff with our upcoming move to Bloguin. The Rocket Scientist has to contribute more than once a year to stay on.

I figured that if I posted something about the Ortiz and Manny situation, it would have been roundly rejected as homerism and I would have lost whatever shred of credibility I may have had. Personally, I'm not shocked Ortiz used steroids, but after what Bronson Arroyo said the same day, I feel like everyone was using in 2003 and not necessarily in 2004. That being said, I thought Ortiz used roids before his name came out on this list. I just didn't think they were to blame for his slump at the beginning of the year. I'm not going to go out and string up anyone on the list for 2003. The fact of the matter is that there have been no tests found to be positive when the PEDs were illegal and in the years the Red Sox did anything of value. So while it sucks that these two did roids (or andro or amphetamines… it still hasn't come out what Papi actually took) it doesn't change my opinion of any of them any more than what it was on wednesday.

and to nip this one in the bud, Red Sox security having steroids doesn't mean Red Sox players were using them. I know tons of guys in NY who use roids and that doesnt mean that the people at the bar they bounce or at the building they live in (which also houses several knicks players and yankees) do roids. It was an unfortunate situation but seeing as how the MLB went and did an investigation and no penalties were doled out, it seems to be just an unfortunate coincidence. I would have come to the same conclusion whether this happened to the Yankees, Mets, Phillies, Tigers, or any other team.

as a dc resident i just think its funny that the pirates won at least one game against the natty kats over the weekend. burnett is an idiot

  9. The Northerner Says:

And another thing… I hated Manny and while I like Papi, he is hardly my favorite player or "beloved". Now if it came out that Pedroia or Beckett did roids, then I would be heartbroken. I have waning respect for DHs. They were a big part of why steroids were popular. DHs are only there for power and dingers. No one wants a DH that hits only for average.

  10. Randy Says:

Fitting that Burnett got the win against the Bucco's yesterday. Go Nats!
