That was close.

According to, Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance enhancing drugs and will be suspended for 50 games starting today.

Hopefully this isn’t a big joke or something, but Sports Illustrated is reporting it along with the LA newspapers. It wasn’t a big joke. He’s done for 50 games. Sucks to be him.

As if Jason Bay’s performance this year hasn’t been enough, this huge news makes that trade the Sox made exponentially better. Again, I’ve said it a lot, but it can’t be said enough, Thank you Pittsburgh. Truly, thank you. – Love, Boston.

UPDATE: Two sources told ESPN’s T.J. Quinn and Mark Fainaru-Wada that the drug used by Ramirez is hCG — human chorionic gonadotropin. HCG is a women’s fertility drug typically used by steroid users to restart their body’s natural testosterone production as they come off a steroid cycle. It is similar to Clomid, the drug Bonds, Giambi and others used as clients of BALCO.

he’s a cheater and not just this year for many, like big papi and EVERY other major league player. it’s just not the stars.

every championship is tainted since the late 80’s A’s, even your precious red sox.

  2. The Northerner Says:

Well if every other player is cheating and using steroids, doesn’t that then create a level playing field? Any world series championships would be tainted only if a current team was playing a team from the 70s and before.

  3. C Gally Says:

Both are fair points. Why can’t it just be like the NFL where everyone uses but no one cares? Seems to be working out nicely for them.

  4. ebj Says:

not necessarily level but i understand the argument. My thing is the high horse sox fans sat on about winning the right way rode off without them yesterday. they got egg on their face too.

  5. C Gally Says:

But don’t you get it ebj? The Yankees are the evil ones. They spend so much money!!

  6. The Northerner Says:

Ok, first of all there are so many rumors going around about Sox fans that I’m starting to think they’re the GERMAN Club. I don’t recall anyone going on (from the Red Sox side) about how they won it the right way and everyone else cheats. That’s just assumed because A-Rod was found to have done steroids, they haven’t won in awhile, the Red Sox have won recently, and they’re rivals.

It’s unfair to say that any fan thinks their team does steroids (except the Pirates fans, because their players have such low salaries they can’t afford ‘roids), and we may be in denial about it, but until now, we (and that means everyone, not just Boston fans) thought that it was the just guys who obviously took ‘roids and then everyone else. Now with A-Rod and Manny, it seems like everyone was taking it, from David Ortiz to Adam Dunn to Jack Wilson. If it came out that all three never took them I wouldn’t be surprised, but if it came out that all of them did take them, I still wouldn’t be surprised.

But as for the Red Sox fans, we are just like everyone else that thinks their team can do no wrong. It just so happens that we recently won two World Series and are a very big market team. But going out and saying we won it the right way and no one else has, that’s just not true. And try to keep in mind that one bad apple may have ruined the bunch. It might be one or two douche bag writers, but they don’t speak for everyone.

Well I heard, that after each player retires, he has to donate 10% of his retirement back to the team.

  8. The Northerner Says:

There’s also a pool on the roof of Fenway. And they all get a Red Sox logo tattooed on their wrist under where their watch is.

  9. ebj Says:

you are out of your gourd if you think red sox fans didn’t boast for for 4 damn years bout none … NONE of their players being on the mitchell report or busted for roids. you now have 0 cred on this. haha.

(sorry, had to take out an offensive word, i typed while a bit sauced. anyway, what will really get people ticked is when they find out the number of football players on peds.)

  10. The Northerner Says:

See the thing that causes your point to make no sense is who were the Red Sox fans bragging to? The only people who we know did roids for the last few years (up until now) were Roger Clemens, Barry bonds, Guillermo Mota, Jason Grilli, and some other lower level players. No one on any World Series teams. You may have thought that they were bragging about that because some gloated a lot, but any other WS team could say the same thing.

I think a large part of the hatred of Red Sox fans is made up of the fact that there are a shit-ton of bandwagon fans now (many in DC) and ESPN makes out with the Red Sox almost daily. What you’re referencing is probably all the new Sox fans who suddenly realized they were Boston fans in 2004. And the rest of us should not be held accountable for their jackassness.

  11. ebj Says:

no, i am not. i work with plenty of “old” red sox fans and all of them … bragged about how none of their guys were ever on the mitchell report or rumored to be on roids. they weren’t the yankees or o’s or whoever. i seem to be surrounded by either tenn vols fans or bosox fans. the former is great, now that they suck, the latter not so much.

the old fans believed it all, team of destiny who did it right, blah, blah, blah. there is none of that in sports, guess i am jaded but every pro team in any sport has quite a few aholes and cheats.
