Orange Bowl, part duex

December 31, 2008
So here we are again. Another BCS bowl game, another opportunity for Tech to make a statement. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: You want to be a big time program, you win this football game.

In 1995, the Hokies took down Texas in a huge Sugar Bowl upset. 4 years later we’re in the championship game. We doubt that was coincidental.

We’ve had 2 other chances to win huge BCS games, and blown them both. (Yeah yeah, Auburn was good, but beatable).

As far as this match up goes, we really have no idea. The only Cincy game any of us watched this year was their almost-debacle against WVU. But we doubt very much that the winning or losing of the game rests with the Bearcats.

No no, that responsibility lies with us. Well, not us the fans, but the team we root for. What Hokie squad will show up? The lights out team that played in the ACC Championship, or the “Let’s Pass On 3 Straight Downs Even Though We Are Up By 5 Against ECU With Only 4 Minutes Left” team. Though, to be fair, the latter was more of a coaching decision… hintity hint hint.

But whatever you think of this season, the fact remains that we can make great strides by winning this game. Let’s get this thing done so we can stop living in 1995. No one wants that.

Congrats to last week’s winner and recently added prediction expert Bobby P. For those who are not familiar with ol’ BP, he’s about as ginger as they come.

So for you, you get the most successful ginger of all time…

Hope this makes up for you guys not having souls.
Now, on to this week’s picks:
C Gally: 18 – 12 VT, no offensive touchdowns

The DiP: 20 – 16 VT

The Northerner: 28 – 24 VT

CMU Football Analyst: 29 – 14 VT

B Dubs 31 – 10 VT

Wright: 24 – 17 Cincy (words cannot describe how much we hate you, Mr. Wright)

Lady Wright: 24 – 17 VT

The Bull: 24 – 21 VT

G Way: 24 – 10 VT, a blocked kick and defensive score

Maniak: 24 – 9 VT, blocked punt

Poppa Gally: 35 – 14 VT, 3 blocked kicks, defense scores 3 touchdowns. (Clearly in the realm of possibility.)

We really don’t know anyone that went to Cincinnati. Not really shocking, if you’ve ever actually visited the city. So we sent a letter to Chad Johnson, stating that we’d like an opinion from the 3rd best receiver on the Bengals. We received no response.

Good luck to all. The winner of this may actually get some sort of prize, but most likely not.

We knew this day would come. We’ve used Sig so much already, and Mr. McQueen is out.

Here are some of the possible heroes we considered:

Greased Up Deaf Guy

Disco Stu

John Candy

Richard Roma

If you don’t know this movie, you are no better than a ginger.

(I bet you all thought that we’d go with Baby Mangino as an excuse to put his picture up one last time. But you are wrong…. we will be having an end of year post.)

But only one man could come up with all the qualities needed for this win. Having never won a BCS game before, we need someone resourceful. Someone who can think on their feet to meet an opponent we’ve not yet seen. We’ll need a kick ass attitude and a cocky stride.

At first, we thought the man was Poochie.

But no. We need a true hero.

You guessed it.

Captain Steven Hiller from Independence Day.

Let’s kick the tires and light the fires, big daddy!

Bowl Game Handicapping

December 19, 2008

It’s that time of year again where the snow starts to fall and we start to bet on teams we do not care about at all.

Navy Vs Wake Forest

EAGLEBANK (Dec. 20, 11 a.m., ESPN)
Washinton, DC
Line: Wake -3

Pick: Wake to cover

Though it is practically a home game for Navy, I think Wake can stop the wishbone well enough to cover the 3. And if they don’t Georgia Tech will have some fun against them in ACC play.

Gally’s take: It’s a bowl game that starts at 11 am. It’s either this or poker reruns on ESPN, I ‘spose.

Fresno State Vs Colorado State

NEW MEXICO (Dec. 20, 2:30 p.m., ESPN)
Albuquerque, NM
Line: Fresno -3

Pick: Fresno to cover

Neither team has a defense. But with that said, the Fresno offence and defense are just a touch better, statistically.

Gally’s take: First I’ve heard of Albuquerque since the last Bugs Bunny cartoon I saw.

Memphis Vs USF

ST. PETERSBURG (Dec. 20, 4:30 p.m., ESPN2)
St. Petersburg, Fla
Line: USF -12

Pick: USF to Cover

Matt Grothe enouh said.

Gally’s take: The USF team will be taking segways to the stadium.

BYU Vs Arizona

LAS VEGAS (Dec. 20, 8 p.m., ESPN)
Las Vegas, NV
Line: Arizona -3

Pick: BYU with the points

BYU is the smart choice here. They are the better team and may have even played in a harder conference this year. I would even say take the money line for BYU to win if you have that option.

Gally’s take: Wasn’t BYU supposed to be playing a BCS game? At least they are sending the Mormons to a nice, wholesome city like Las Vegas.

Southern Mississippi VS Troy

R+L CARRIES NEW ORLEANS (Dec. 21, 8:15 p.m. ESPN)
New Orleans, LA
Line: Troy -4.5

Pick: Troy to cover

Both teams have high powered offences but Troy has a little bit better defense. Whatever you do take the over on 55 points. No chance this game is less than 30-25.

Gally’s take: Hi, I’m Troy the Football Team. You may remember me from such bowls as “The Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia Pet Gary, Indiana Bowl” and “No Means No Sexual Harassment Bowl”.

TCU Vs Boise State

POINSETTIA (Dec. 23, 8 p.m., ESPN)
San Diego, CA
Line: TCU -2.5

Pick: TCU to cover

I think this game might be the best non BCS bowl game. Boise’s top 15 offence versus TCU’s number 2 rated defense. It will be fun to watch but, no blue turf equals no Boise victory.

Gally’s take: Tech and Cincy should just go ahead and switch with this bowl. Much more deserving of a trip to Miami.

Hawaii Vs Notre Dame

HAWAII (Dec. 24, 8 p.m., ESPN)
Honolulu, HI
Line: Pick ‘em

Pick: Hawaii

I really don’t know about this one. I just want to see the Irish loose.

Gally’s take: Chances this game gets crushed in the ratings by “A Christmas Story”: 100%. I’m so glad that teams refuse bowls based on finals, but decide to go ahead and have them play on CHRISTMAS FREAKING EVE.

Florida Atlantic Vs Central Michigan

MOTOR CITY (Dec. 26, 7:30 p.m., ESPN)
Detroit, MI
Line: CMU -6.5

Pick: CMU to cover

It’s practically a home game for CMU which is helpful. Also, I have the Lafever and the only cure is more Chippewa.

Gally’s take: Also known as the Bail-out Bowl.

North Carolina Vs West Virginia

MEINEKE CAR CARE (Dec. 27, 1 p.m., ESPN)
Charlotte, NC
Line: Pick ‘em

Pick: UNC

It’s practically a home game for UNC and I just want to chant ACC ACC ACC ACC at the end of the game.

Gally’s take: One of the better bowl games this year. WVU may be headed for a Don Nehlen-esque era if they go down to UNC.

Wisconsin Vs Florida State

CHAMPS SPORTS (Dec. 27, 4:30 p.m., ESPN)
Orlando, FL
Line: FSU -5

Pick: FSU to Cover

Florida State is the better team with the better record and its in Florida, enough said.

Gally’s take: Another great bowl game. And I hope FSU goes down like one of their football players in an online cheating scandal.

Miami Vs California

EMERALD (Dec. 27, 8 p.m., ESPN)
San Francisco, CA
Line: Cal -7.5

Pick: Miami with the points

Considering Cal lost to Maryland I don’t trust them. However, I think Cal will win the game just won’t be by more than a touchdown.

Gally’s take: Remember playing Air Force in this game? I don’t either. It has been repressed way down, and will most likely turn into a tumor one day. Freaking baseball field…

Northern Illinois Vs Louisiana Tech

INDEPENDENCE (Dec. 28, 8:15 p.m., ESPN)
Shreveport, LA
Line: NIU -1.5

Pick: LT with the points/ straight up

Since the spread is only 1.5 you can take the money line on this one. The game is in Louisiana, and since both teams are statically equal, location is the only reasoning here.

Gally’s take: Bleh.

Rutgers Vs North Carolina State

PAPAJOHNS.COM (Dec. 29, 3 p.m., ESPN)
Birmingham, AL
Line: Rutgers -8

Pick: Rutgers to cover

I have always wondered why this game isn’t in Louisville at Papa Johns Stadium, ohh well. NC State had a good run this year to get to a bowl game but they won’t be able to handle Rutgers if Teel has a good day.

Gally’s take: Another Big East / ACC game? Someone has some undealt-with emotions.

Missouri Vs Northwestern

ALAMO (Dec. 29, 8 p.m., ESPN)
San Antonio,TX
Line: Missouri -12.5

Pick: Northwestern with the points

This game is an interesting matchup. A team that was projected to be good that never really preformed against a team that wasn’t supposed to be as competitive as it was. I don’t trust Missouri to cover 13 since they have underachieved and underperformed all year.

Gally’s take: Did anyone see the beat down Missouri put on the ‘Huskers on the road? Yeah, they are on a different level than our mighty Hokies.

Maryland Vs Nevada

HUMANITARIAN (Dec. 30, 4:30 p.m., ESPN)
Boise, ID
Line: Nevada -1.5

Pick: Nevada to cover

The annual Blue Turf Bowl is here again. I give Nevada the nod here because they are used to playing on that turf since they have to do it every 2 years.

Gally’s take: It was widely (and most likely falsely) reported that Maryland had sold 16 tickets to this game. Not surprisingly, most people believed that when it first came out.

Oklahoma State Vs Oregon

HOLIDAY (Dec. 30, 8 p.m., ESPN)
San Diego, CA
Line: OSU -3

Pick: OSU to cover

OSU has better team speed and plays in a better conference. Also, if OSU wins T. Boone Pickens might buy all of us a windmill.

Gally’s take: Ugly orange vs. ugly uniforms. No one wins.

Rice Vs Western Michigan

TEXAS (Dec. 30, 8 p.m., NFL Network)
Line: Rice -3

Pick: Rice to cover

Both teams can’t play defense but Rice has the better offence. Also, the game is in their hometown of Houston.

Gally’s take: Rice is a much more viable commodity in this economy than cars. Go with the food product.

Houston Vs Air Force

ARMED FORCES (Dec. 31, noon, ESPN)
Fort Worth, TX
Line: Hou -3.5

Pick: Air Force with points

Houston has a high powered offence but no defense. If Air Forces defense can get a stop or 2 they will pull it out.

Gally’s take: Just reminds me of that tumor…

Pittsburgh Vs Oregon State

SUN (Dec. 31, 2 p.m., CBS)
El Paso, TX
Line: OSU -2.5

Pick: Pitt with the points

What you gonna do when LeSean McCoy runs wild on you? Brother

Gally’s take: Gotta disagree. Pitt’s going to get smoked.

Boston College Vs Vanderbilt

MUSIC CITY (Dec. 31, 3:30 p.m., ESPN)
Nashville, TN
Line: BC -3.5

Pick: BC to cover

BC has a better offence and a better defense. The game is in Tennessee so hopefully the fans will help keep Vanderbilt close. But, BC will just be to much for them.

Gally’s take: From Orange Bowl to this? Yeesh. I’d feel bad if I didn’t hate the Eagles so much.

Kansas Vs Minnesota

INSIGHT (Dec. 31, 5:30 p.m., NFL Network)
Tempe, AZ
Line: KU -9.5

Pick: KU to cover

Does anyone remember when this used to be called the bowl. Those were the good old days, people were buying stocks that didn’t turn a profit and money was being spent like everyone was Pacman Jones. Oh right the game. Neither team has a defense but Kansas’s offence is a lot better than Minnesota’s.

Gally’s take: If Baby Mangino is in attendance, the Jayhawks roll.

Georgia Tech Vs LSU

CHICK-FIL-A (Dec. 31, 7:30 p.m., ESPN)
Atlanta, GA
Line: GT -4

Pick: GT to cover

It’s a home game for Georgia Tech and if LSU doesn’t have enough team speed to stop the wishbone it’s going to be a long day.

Gally’s take: It must suck for Tech to see a worse Tech going to a better bowl… Yeah, must suck.

Iowa Vs South Carolina

OUTBACK (Jan. 1, 11 a.m., ESPN)
Tampa, FL
Line: Iowa -3.5

Pick: SC with the points

These are two very equal teams with very good defenses. In this case you got to trust the Ole’ Ball Coach.

Gally’s take: How in the hell did South Carolina get a New Year’s Day bowl? At least we’ll all be too hungover to watch it.

Clemson Vs Nebraska

(Jan. 1, 1 p.m., CBS)
Jacksonville, FL
Line: Clem -2.5

Pick: Clemson to cover

Clemson has a better defense Nebraska has a better offence. The better offence of Nebraska may be due to the lack of defense of the Big 12.

Gally’s take: Lock Clemson up for robbery after they stole this bowl from FSU.

Michigan State Vs Georgia

CAPITAL ONE (Jan. 1, 1 p.m., ABC)
Orlando, FL
Line: Georgia -7.5

Pick: MSU with the points

This is a battle of two really good running backs. I think Georgia will win but will never really run away with it. I like Michigan State to loose by no more than 7.

Gally’s take: Remember when Georgia was #1? Neither do they.

Southern California Vs Pennsylvania State

ROSE (Jan. 1, 4:30 p.m., ABC)
Pasadena, CA
Line: USC -9.5

Pick: USC to cover

As much as I hate to say it USC is good, damn good (it’s easy when you get to pay your players to come to school). But, the Big 10 is awful and Penn State doesn’t have enough team speed to stay with USC.

Gally’s take: Needs more Song Girls.

Virginia Tech Vs Cincinnati

ORANGE (Jan. 1, 8:30 p.m., Fox)
Miami, FL
Line: Cinn -2.5

Pick: VT with the points/ straight up

Depending on which Hokie team shows up this could be VT’s first BCS bowl win.

Gally’s take: If Voldemort is still running the offense, take the under. Even if it’s 3.

Mississippi Vs Texas Tech

COTTON (Jan. 2, 2 p.m., Fox)
Dallas, TX
Line: TT -5

Pick: TT to cover

If Crabtree is healthy and plays there is no chance Ole Miss can hang with Texas Tech.

Gally’s take: Best value on the board. Tech may win by 50.

Kentucky Vs East Carolina

LIBERTY (Jan. 2, 5 p.m., ESPN)
Memphis, TN
Line: ECU -3

Pick: Kentucky with the points

ECU won Conference USA but has not looked as strong as they did against VT and WVU. We will see what ECU team will show up for this one.

Gally’s take: I hate everything about the Pirates. 16 years without a winning season? Give me a break. And ECU sucks too.

Utah Vs Alabama

SUGAR (Jan. 2, 8 p.m., Fox)
New Orleans, LA
Line: Bama -10

Pick: Bama to cover

I hope Utah can keep it close. But, Alabama will have a sour taste in their mouth for not going to the title game and will have something to prove at Utah’s expense.

Gally’s take: Anyone in the country not rooting for Utah? Didn’t think so.

Buffalo Vs Connecticut

Toronto, Canada
Line: UConn -4.5

Pick: UConn to cover

Buffalo is a nice story this year but they will not be able to stop Donald Brown.

Gally’s take: Can these two teams just stay in Canada?

Ohio State Vs Texas

FIESTA (Jan. 5, 8 p.m., Fox)
Glendale, AZ
Line: UT -8.5

Pick: UT to cover

Texas is bitter that they got passed over for the Big 12 Championship game and they have too much team speed for Ohio State to handle. I think the last 2 BCS Championships have shown that.

Gally’s take: Texas puts up 60? Maybe 65? This could get ugly real fast.

Tulsa Vs Ball State

GMAC (Jan. 6, 8 p.m., ESPN)
Mobile, AL
Line: Ball St -2.5

Pick: Ball St to cover

I have a couple questions regarding this game. 1, why is this the second to last bowl game? And 2, why did Ball State’s Coach leave to go to San Diego State? Was that the best he could do after turning a nothing program into a respectable team? There will be a lot of offense here take the over of 77.

Gally’s take: Hehe… Ball State…

Florida Vs Oklahoma

BCS Title Game (Jan. 8, 8 p.m., FOX)
Miami, FL
Line: UF -3

Pick: Oklahoma to win

This might be the best title game since Texas-USC. Both teams can spread you out and score. Florida has the better defense. It will most likely come down to the last team who has the ball (a la Texas-USC).

Gally’s take: A title game without Ohio State is a victory for all.

Catchin Up

December 19, 2008

We know, it’s been far too long. Here’s a few business points to take care of:

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! ACC CHAMPS! We don’t care how we got there, just that we did. WHAT UP ORANGE BOWL!!
  • Over-under of people in attendance: 300.
  • Your humble editor was invited as a guest blogger over at FBS. Check it out here.
  • Our crew also voted in the Blogger Heisman Award. Our number ones were all the same.

Greg Boooooooooooooooooooooone

Take it easy folks.

ACC Championship Game: So it’s come to this…

December 5, 2008
First off, let us say this:

Seriously, the ACC Championship game. Are you serious?!?! Who cares how we got here!! We made it, and in the process, beat UVA and kept them out of a bowl. What more could anyone ask for in a single Saturday?

There’s not too much to talk about for the Annual Drubbing of UVA. Well, there might be, but we’re too tired/buzzed to go over it.

But we do want to hit one point. The 4th down from the goal line. Here’s how it played out:
Are we going for it? Yes. Awesome, love the call.

Shot gun with Boone? AWESOME. Is this Voldemort’s redeeming moment as Offensive Coordinator?

He’s just going to run the ball up the middle, right……. remote control through the wall.

A MISDIRECTION DRAW PLAY?!?!?!?! There is no amount of anger that can possibly describe our feelings at that moment. The defense is coming full bore towards the backfield. We have an over-powering force getting the ball. He is NOT going to fall backwards at full speed.
But noooooooooooooo. He does a fake hand off, which basically means he is standing perfectly still for 2 seconds while the defense blasts the offensive line.
We often say we don’t know much about the particulars of football. But we KNOW that the play called on this occasion was the dumbest thing in the history of life. Way dumber than Joey.

But we love beating UVA. Love it. Until next time…

So we play BC for the 4th time in 14 months. This is getting to be redundant. They beat us in the regular season. We beat them when it matters.

But seriously, this game is going to be one of the toughest we play all season. The Eagles are hot, and their strength lies in their run defense. Unless you’ve watched no football this year, you know we aren’t going to be passing on them.

Our offense is more predictable than a 27-year-old girl living in Arlington. This game could end up 3-2.

But this is what we live for. Conference Championships. BCS bowls. You know who wins their conference in a down year? Great teams. We assume that’s what we want to be, even if the athletic department seems hell-bent against it.

Its time to roll, kids. Time to get it done when it matters.

Big ups to The Bull for the exact prediction last week. In honor of beating UVA and gettingt he score on the nose, he is a proud recipient of the Commonwealth Cup.

Best picture ever? The cup. The Lunch Pail. At UVA. Best picture ever.

Let’s hit up this week’s completely amatuer picks.

C Gally: 24 – 16 VT, Macho touchdown, Boone rushing touchdown

The Bull: 13 – 7 VT

The Northerner: 17 – 14 VT

Wright: 20 – 17 VT

Lady Wright: 14 – 9 VT

Poppa Gally: 17 – 14 VT, ONE blocked kick (really taking it down a notch)

CMU Football Analyst: 17 – 6 BC (seriously, he’s becoming our new Lee Corso)

The DiP: 23 – 17 VT, Boone scores twice (giggity)

G Way: 24 – 10 VT

Maniak: 17 – 14 VT

B Dubs: 24 – 20 VT

Bobby P: 27 – 13 VT

Our opponent prediction comes from a good buddy, good friend, and total tool bag known only as Riescher: 24 – 21 BC, all defensive scores (except for the FG, obviously)

Good luck to all, and to all a good night.

Not even a question.
